REDI
Redi’s group has recently welcomed a new member: Artemis, who previously belonged to the Bondan and Joss group. Her arrival has brought new dynamics to the group, especially as she tries to assert her dominance over the other members. However, Artemis’s efforts don’t always succeed—particularly when it comes to Redi.
In the cage, when Artemis tried to snatch food from Redi, she was met with resistance. Redi stood her ground and successfully defended her food. A similar incident occurred during forest school. At the time, Artemis was eating in the tree canopy, holding a large amount of food, while Redi, down on the forest floor, didn’t have enough. Redi quickly chased after Artemis, resulting in a high-speed pursuit through the branches. In the end, Redi managed to snatch the food from Artemis.
In addition to standing up for herself, Redi has also shown a protective side—especially toward Seko. On one occasion, when Artemis tried to bother Seko by tugging at her in the canopy, Redi immediately intervened. She approached Artemis and drove her away. Artemis then backed off and was later seen bothering Julia instead.
This shift in Redi’s behavior is quite striking compared to when she first joined forest school sessions. Back then, she seemed timid and often lost her food to more dominant orangutans. Now, she’s beginning to show dominance, standing up for herself when provoked, and even protecting other group members.
During forest school, Redi tends to avoid the forest floor and spends most of her time in the tree canopy. As a result, her diet mostly consists of forest fruits, leaves, bark, and termites found in the lower canopy. Her preference for staying above is likely related to her aversion to human presence below. Redi will only going down to the forest floor if the area feels completely safe and free of humans.
