Redi

Considering Redi’s behavior, as he is known to be highly enthusiastic about food and tends to dominate feeding portions, two other orangutans—Otan and Seko—are currently placed separately in the enclosure corridor during feeding times and enrichment sessions. This adjustment is intended to ensure that Otan and Seko are able to receive their full portions, while also keeping Redi’s intake controlled and preventing overconsumption. This approach is part of a broader effort to manage feeding behavior so that each individual can develop in a balanced way.

Interestingly, although Redi is known to be particularly eager when it comes to fruits, he shows different behavior when given milk or soy milk as an enrichment. In these moments, Redi appears more relaxed and unhurried. He allows the keepers to distribute the drinks to Seko and Otan first without showing competitive behavior. When it is his turn, Redi often holds the milk in his mouth and sips it slowly, seemingly savoring the taste before swallowing. This behavior presents a striking contrast to his usual response to solid food and highlights Redi’s behavioral flexibility in different contexts.

Meanwhile, Redi’s interactions with humans continue to follow a consistent pattern. He remains cautious and keeps his distance. Whenever he feels that staff members are too close, Redi quickly moves away—an instinctive response that reflects his wild nature and limited dependence on humans. This attitude is considered a positive indicator in his rehabilitation process, as it shows that Redi has not lost his natural wariness of human presence.

Overall, Redi demonstrates complex behavioral dynamics: dominant in certain feeding contexts, yet capable of restraint in others. Through appropriate enclosure management and carefully regulated feeding practices, Redi continues to learn about boundaries, both in relation to food and to other individuals around him. This process plays an important role in shaping more adaptive behavior and preparing Redi for the next stages of his rehabilitation.
