Mamat, a 23-year-and-1-month-old male orangutan, has been moved to the Sintang Quarantine Center from Tembak Forest School since 2020. Throughout his rehabilitation, Mamat has consistently shown stable health, calm behavior, and a generally peaceful disposition.

As an adult male, orangutans are typically known to be territorial and often display aggression toward other males. However, this is not the case with Mamat. After several years in rehabilitation, he has not shown any territorial behavior, even when near Beno, another adult male housed in the neighboring cage. The two seem to ignore each other completely, even during feeding time. Mamat and Beno often eat side by side without displaying aggression, each calmly focused on their own food.

During feeding activities, not all of Mamat’s food is placed on the lower feeding platform. Some items, such as vegetables, are deliberately placed on the roof of his cage to encourage him to move more actively and hang above. This is because when all the food is placed below, Mamat often eats while lying down in a relaxed manner, barely moving.

One of Mamat’s most interesting habits is his unique way of eating long beans. Instead of using his hands as usual, he picks them up one by one with his mouth through the gaps in the cage bars. After finishing one, he takes another the same way until all are gone—only then does he go back down. Although the gaps are wide enough for his hands to reach through, Mamat consistently chooses this peculiar method, reflecting his calm, patient nature and distinctive personality.

In terms of interaction, Mamat still shows curiosity toward humans. He often approaches or observes people who are near his cage, a behavior that highlights his naturally inquisitive character.
