MAMAT
In the midst of the dry season affecting Sintang Regency, Mamat seems to thoroughly enjoy each piece of fresh fruit provided, such as coconut, watermelon, cucumber, and papaya. When mealtime arrives, he always chooses these fruits first, devouring them with enthusiasm as if finding a refreshing escape from the heat surrounding the quarantine center. Although his enclosure isn’t directly exposed to sunlight, the high temperatures make Mamat drink more often from the water tap in his cage to stay hydrated. The keepers also add soy milk as an additional enrichment to ensure his nutritional needs are met. Interestingly, Mamat finishes the soy milk quickly, unlike his usual relaxed approach to food or drinks.
As usual, Mamat spends his days leisurely in his cage. He often changes resting spots, sometimes in his shelter and occasionally on the upper floor of his cage, where he enjoys his favorite position: face towards the cage’s ventilation. The gentle breeze coming through the ventilation provides a natural cooling effect, allowing him to relax comfortably until he drifts off to sleep. This quiet moment seems to be a precious time for Mamat to enjoy simple comfort amid the scorching dry season.
His interactions with the animal keepers remain consistent. When he sees them working around his cage, Mamat usually comes down from his resting spot and watches them intently. Approaching mealtime, he often makes his characteristic vocalizations, acting as an “alarm” to remind them that feeding time is near. If a new person is around his enclosure, Mamat chooses to stand upright, showing off his large physique without any aggressive expression—unlike Mungki in the neighboring cage, who reacts more actively by spinning around and spraying water from his mouth. This calm and observant behavior reveals Mamat’s steady and composed character, reflecting his self-control amid his daily routine.
