MAMAT

When Mamat was ready and waiting at the front of his cage, the animal keeper promptly handed him a coconut. Mamat began peeling the coconut with his teeth, but suddenly, it slipped from his grasp. Startled, he noticed that Mungky, seeing the animal keeper approach, made a movement that caused a drum inside the enclosure to fall, producing a loud noise that surprised Mamat. Since the coconut couldn’t fit through the enclosure bars, Mamat had to carefully peel it so he could eat it through the bars.

After the coconut fell, Mamat appeared slightly annoyed with Mungky and approached him with his arms wide open. However, Mungky seemed unbothered, entirely focused on his own coconut. The animal keeper quickly retrieved Mamat’s dropped coconut, cleaned it, and returned it to him. Mamat then continued peeling it slowly until he finished.

After eating his coconut, Mamat no longer paid attention to Mungky and returned to his favorite spot on the upper level of his cage near the ventilation. There, he rested without engaging in any activity, simply waiting for the next feeding time.

When it was time for his meal, Mamat remained motionless at the top of his enclosure, unaware that the animal keeper was already waiting with food in hand. The keeper called his name, prompting Mamat to leave his resting spot. Due to his poor eyesight, Mamat struggled slightly to locate his food. The animal keeper guided him by calling his name and pointing to the food. Once he spotted it, Mamat approached and began eating slowly, moving around as he ate. Sometimes he faced the animal keeper, who stood nearby, and other times he retreated deeper into the enclosure, sitting near his shelter to finish his meal quietly.

Mamat’s interactions with other orangutans, especially Mungky, were minimal. Both being dominant adult males, they tended to avoid each other. However, when one disturbed the other, interactions often escalated into fights.

In contrast, Mamat maintained a consistent relationship with the animal keepers. In the mornings, during routine cage cleaning, Mamat frequently watched the keepers scrubbing the cage floor from inside his space. Similarly, during feeding times, Mamat would approach and gaze at the animal keepers with a friendly demeanor.
