Despite the prolonged dry season and ongoing haze in the Forest School area, Mamat continues to go about his daily routine as usual. Routine monitoring by the animal keepers and medical team has shown no signs of health problems during this period. His activity levels remain normal, and he continues to have a good appetite. As always, his distinctive calls can be heard almost every day as mealtime approaches. It seems the “feeding alarm” never misses a chance to remind the keepers that it is almost time to eat.

Despite his large size and powerful calls, Mamat is actually a rather calm individual. When the keepers are cleaning his overnight cage, carrying out maintenance, or when the team comes in to take photos and videos, he usually sits quietly and watches from where he is. Every now and then, he gets up and moves to another corner for a better view of what is happening, before settling down again to observe. Even when things get noisy, such as when Matuari and Beno are vigorously swinging their barrels around, Mamat usually prefers to sit back and watch rather than join in.

During the hot weather, Mamat also receives various forms of enrichment to add variety to his daily activities and give him something refreshing to enjoy. One of these is an ice block filled with beans. Interestingly, Mamat does not seem to be in a hurry to get to the beans inside. Instead, he patiently waits for the ice to melt little by little. With the strength of his hands and teeth, he could easily bite, chew, or break the ice apart to reach the food more quickly. But Mamat seems to have his own preferred approach—he simply waits as the ice slowly melts, then enjoys the beans as they become accessible.

Besides offering a refreshing activity during hot weather, the ice block also keeps Mamat engaged for longer as he works out how to access the food inside. This type of enrichment adds variety to his feeding routine while encouraging him to interact with objects in his surroundings in a different way.

That is Mamat—calm, observant, and full of little habits that make him uniquely himself.
