MAMAT

Just like any other day at the Sintang Quarantine Center, things have felt a little different lately. The weather in West Kalimantan has been pretty unpredictable scorching hot during the day, cloudy in the afternoon, and most nights end with rain. But that doesn’t really bother Mamat. He has been spending his days pretty chill inside the cage.

Luckily, Mamat’s not alone. Right next to his cage is Beno, his “neighbor” separated only by an iron fence. They can still greet each other, interact a little, and funnily enough, they almost never get into conflicts. Their relationship is calm and easy like two old friends who are just comfortable around each other.

Morning is definitely Mamat’s favorite part of the day. Around 7:30 AM, the animal keeper usually shows up with breakfast. If they’re even a bit late, Mamat will start making noises like he’s calling out, “Hey, don’t forget my food!” because he knows his schedule by heart. While munching on his breakfast, he often watches the keepers busy cleaning the area, making sure everything stays neat and tidy.

These past weeks, Mamat’s days have been peaceful: eating, sleeping, occasionally interacting with Beno, and sometimes just sitting quietly, watching what’s happening around him. His health is also in a great shape. His eating patterns are normal, the medical team keeps up with regular check-ups, and his meals are always well-balanced. The enrichment is varied too, he gets milk, nuts, and other treats that keep him active and happy.

So far, there haven’t been any noticeable changes in Mamat’s behavior. He is still the same calm and observant orangutan, carrying on with his routines just like before.

The hope is that Mamat stays strong and healthy, enjoying his days at the Quarantine Center alongside his “neighbor,” Beno
