Questionnaire for annual and semi-annual reports
Name orangutan: Janet
| Current housing/cage | Sozialization Cage |
| Age | 4,4 Years Old
|
| Current state of health / any particular health issues | Janet is in good health |
| Progress over the past 6 months | Janet is still in the same group and shows consistent behavior patterns. She still often hugs Brenda when she feels uncomfortable or afraid. Brenda responds in a way that makes her feel safe. Outside of these moments, Janet acts normally and continues to interact with other orangutans in her group.
When hugging Brenda, Janet sometimes showed aggressive behavior toward the keeper. As the youngest individual in the group, Janet’s competitive ability was still lower than that of other orangutans. She often lost in competitions, especially when fighting over food or enrichment materials. However, Janet was not intimidated by other orangutans in the group. She was still able to compete and had her own strategy for obtaining and defending food during feeding time, so that no other individual took her food.
In terms of enrichment, Janet is quite active in exploring various materials, especially leaves. She often plays with, bites, or even eats them, although she has not yet shown any behavior of building nests from these materials. She still obtains enrichment materials from leftovers that other orangutans have not taken, and remains enthusiastic when using them.
Overall, Janet was able to adapt to her group, maintain positive interactions with Brenda, and slowly improve her exploration and competition skills, even though she was still the youngest and least confident member of the group.
In December 2025 Forest School became operational again after being inactive for more than a year due to the landslide affecting SOCP Sibolangit.
On her first return to Forest School Janet closely followed the activities of two other orangutans, Rapala and Matang. Initially, they played and foraged in the trees. Then Janet the two orangutans down from the trees and spent time playing on the ground until the Forest School session ended and it was time to return to the enclosure.
On the following day at Forest School, she no longer played on the ground with the two orangutans. However, when the Forest School session ended, she was reluctant to return to the enclosure. She was engaged in play and closely followed Matang, who at that time was also unwilling to return and wanted to continue playing at Forest School. After a gentle approach by the keepers, particularly a female keeper, she eventually came down from the tree and returned safely to the enclosure.
|
| Particular events or progress | Janet showed increased aggressive behavior toward the keeper when she was hugging Brenda. She showed clear signs of disliking the keeper’s get close to Brenda, as if she didn’t want anyone else interacting with Brenda.
At Forest School, she was not grouped with Brenda and appeared to adapt well.
|
| Special relationship to any fellow patients (friendships, conflicts, etc.) | When Janet feels scared or uncomfortable, Janet tends to hug Brenda to seek comfort. However, she still wants to play and interact with other orangutans in her group.
At Forest School Janet frequently followed Rapala and Matang during activities.
