BANIR
After the incident that caused damage to her drinking water tap, Benazir and her daughter, Banir, were moved back to their previous cage, which was previously located in the center. This move was a temporary solution to repair the damage, but it had an unexpected effect on Banir.

Their old cage had recently been vacated by two new male orangutans, who had captured Banir’s interest from the moment they arrived. In her old isolation cage, Banir was often seen peeking curiously through the gaps in the enclosure walls, trying to catch a glimpse of the new orangutans. Banir didn’t just peek; she also tried various ways to get their attention. She would often bang on the walls of her cage, as if inviting interaction. On occasion, Banir would spit water from her mouth or push leaves—usually given during the afternoon—through the gaps in the enclosure walls.

Banir’s curiosity on her new neighbors has added a new dynamic to their daily life, showing how active she is in adapting to and interacting with her environment.

Outside of feeding times and enrichment sessions, Banir often spends time with her mother, Benazir, in their isolation cage. These moments reveal their close bond, with Banir frequently seen hugging her mother or playfully tugging on Benazir’s body with affection. These interactions are a testament to the strong mother-daughter bond.

When feeding time comes, Banir is always ready and alert. She eagerly moves to the front of her cage, waiting enthusiastically to receive her meal. Interestingly, Benazir is always fed first, with Banir patiently waiting for her turn. However, once she receives her food, Banir chooses to move away from her mother, preferring to enjoy her meal alone without worrying that Benazir will take her share. Benazir, on the other hand, shows no interest in disturbing or taking Banir’s food, allowing her the space to enjoy her meal.

After finishing her meal, Banir seems to have extra energy, which she released by trying to interact with the animal keepers. She often approaches them, trying to catch their attention by offering her back for them to pet. If the animal keepers seem distant, Banir will push against the bars of her cage, as if inviting them to come closer and play with her. This behavior demonstrates Banir’s desire for attention and interaction, reflecting her strong social nature even within a confined environment.
