MAMAT
Mamat has been moved again to the adjacent cage—cage number two, which was previously occupied by Mungky. Right next to Mamat’s new cage is Beno, who was also recently relocated. This adjustment was made because Bablu, the mother of Artemis, was brought back from Jerora Forest School to the Sintang Quarantine Center. As a result, there are currently three adult orangutans housed at the quarantine center.
Despite these changes in individual placement, Mamat’s daily activities remain largely unchanged. The presence of Bablu, who is housed at a considerable distance from his cage, does not appear to have any significant effect on his behavior. He continues to display his consistent routines and a strong attentiveness to his surroundings.
Every morning, when the animal keepers clean the cage, Mamat always shows interest in their activities. As soon as the keeper begins cleaning the floor, Mamat climbs down to the lower area and observes every movement closely. He usually lowers his head and watches the cleaning process from start to finish, as if deeply curious about what’s happening. Once the keeper moves to clean Beno’s cage next door, Mamat climbs back up to the upper area and rests there until feeding time.
Mamat adapts well to rainy weather. When it rains, he finds a comfortable spot and continues eating while staying sheltered. If it happens to rain during feeding time, Mamat—who usually eats at the front of his cage—quickly gathers as much food as he can and moves to a dry area. There, he eats calmly and slowly.
Known for his good appetite, Mamat rarely leaves any leftovers. When given bananas, he eats them entirely, including the skin. Enrichment activities, such as providing ice blocks, often reveal his unique behavior. Instead of biting or breaking the ice, Mamat prefers to let it melt slowly in his mouth. He will suck on the ice, take it out, and put it back repeatedly until it becomes small enough to chew and swallow comfortably.
Mamat also seems to greatly enjoy soy milk, one of his favorite drinks. Whenever it’s offered, he drinks it all without hesitation, showing clear enjoyment of both its taste and texture.
Interestingly, Mamat often displays a calm and observant demeanor toward the activities happening around him. When visitors come to observe from outside the cage, Mamat usually notices their presence first. He often watches them quietly from the top of his cage through the ventilation opening, sitting still and gazing at them until they leave. He shows a similar response toward the animal keepers working nearby—watching attentively but without aggression, as if monitoring them with natural curiosity and alertness.
Overall, Mamat continues to show stable, calm, and adaptive behavior in response to environmental changes and daily routines at the quarantine center. His attentive observation of his surroundings and unique feeding habits have become his distinctive behavioral traits.
