BONDAN
In the morning at the forest school, Bondan begins her activities by climbing trees and exploring on her own. She spends most of her time in the lower and middle canopy, busily foraging during her explorations. The food she finds varies, ranging from young leaves, shoots, and bark to occasionally discovering termite nests, which she eagerly eats. Bondan demonstrates remarkable persistence in her explorations, rarely joining the other orangutans.
Around 10 A.M., Bondan descends to the forest floor. Instead of venturing further, she was seen playing alone in a puddle of rainwater left from the previous night. Bondan dips her hands into the puddle, splashes the water, and even uses a stick to dig, making the puddle appear deeper. While playing, she is fully focused on her activity and pays no attention to Artemis, who is perched in a nearby tree. Similarly, Artemis shows no interest in approaching Bondan, merely observing from a distance.
Bondan spends about 10 minutes in the puddle, occasionally exploring the forest floor briefly before returning to it. Once she gets bored, she climbs a tree near where Artemis is sitting, but no interaction occurs between them. Bondan continues her exploration, chewing on young leaves from the tree she climbed. Shortly after, she decides to take a midday rest on a branch in the middle canopy, looking comfortable and calm as she enjoys her break.
After resting, Bondan spends more time on the forest floor, actively foraging and exploring, sometimes accompanied by Joss, who follows her from behind. However, Bondan maintains her independent nature, engaging minimally or playing with the other orangutans.
In the social cage, Bondan must be separated from Joss and Artemis during feeding times. When it’s time to eat, Bondan is placed in a tunnel until Joss and Artemis finish their meals. This separation is necessary due to the higher dominance of Joss and Artemis. If not separated, Bondan’s food is often taken by Joss or Artemis, leaving her with insufficient food.
Once feeding time is over, Bondan is returned to the social cage with Joss and Artemis. Outside of mealtimes, Bondan typically spends her time playing alone or simply observing the activities around her. While Bondan tends to be quieter, she still displays exceptional intelligence and determination, especially in her exploration and foraging activities at the forest school.
